In recruitment, making an impression is not about using lots of colour; it is about the reader remembering you after a quick skim. A colour bar, a name in the right place and a one-line summary with a figure are enough. Việc Hot has 24 eye-catching CV templates for design, communications, marketing and sales, with a main colour you can change to suit your industry. The sections below cover who should use them, where to put the focal point, how to choose colours and a photo, and when the effect backfires.
At advertising agencies, media companies, fashion and cosmetics brands, food and beverage businesses and retail chains, the person reading your CV is often the head of the creative team, the marketing manager or a store manager. They look at a CV the way they would look at a product: a deliberate layout, tasteful colour and uncluttered text count in your favour before they even read the content.
By contrast, applications to banks, accounting roles and government agencies, or through a corporate recruitment portal with screening software, should use a one-column ATS-friendly version; save the eye-catching template for the copy you send directly by email.
A CV should have only one visual focal point, and it must land on what the recruiter needs to see first: your name, the position you are applying for and a one-line summary. Keep everything else neutral. What deserves emphasis varies by position:
| Position | Emphasise | How to show it |
|---|---|---|
| Sales executive | EmphasiseSales figures, how far you beat targets | How to show itOne line of figures in bold under your name |
| Content creator | EmphasiseChannels you have run, views | How to show itChannel links in the contact section |
| Event organiser | EmphasiseEvent names and scale | How to show itYour three biggest events |
| Design, visuals | EmphasisePortfolio | How to show itBehance link next to your name |
| Teaching, training | EmphasiseCertificates, learner results | How to show itCertificates block before experience |
Pick one main colour and one neutral (dark grey or black), and avoid a third. An old agency trick is to use a colour close to the brand identity of the company you are applying to: it is understated and shows you have done your research. Text on a coloured background needs enough contrast: print a test copy in black and white, and if it is still legible, it passes. Use a single sans-serif family such as Inter, Roboto or Montserrat for the whole page.
Only include a portrait photo if it is customary in your industry: plain background, shoulders straight, even lighting, no skin-smoothing filters and no full-length shots.
Colour buys a few seconds of attention, but the decision to invite you to an interview comes from the bullet points. Write to the formula action, figure, result; for any campaign or event you can state the scale, your role and the change it brought about.
Communications specialist: the same work written two ways
Before: Managed the company's social media channels and created engaging content.
After: Planned and produced 24 short videos a month for a beverage brand's TikTok channel; the channel grew from 12,000 to 85,000 followers in six months, and two videos passed one million views.
Two dense columns also make screening software mix up lines from the two sides.
What experienced applicants often do is keep two versions of the same content: an eye-catching one to send directly to the recruiter and a one-column one to submit through recruitment portals. On Việc Hot, the content is filled in from your profile, so switching between the 24 eye-catching templates and other templates needs no retyping; each template has 10 layouts, 36 backgrounds and 69 fonts to adjust. Before sending, open the PDF on your phone and print a test copy in black and white.
Not really. Recruiters in these two fields are used to sober layouts, and applications usually go through screening software; a professional or ATS-friendly template is safer.
One main colour and one neutral. A third colour only makes sense if it is the brand colour of the company you are applying to, used on a small detail.
No. A percentage bar does not say what you can actually do; replace it with the tool name and how many years you have used it, or something you have produced with it.
It depends on the industry. Sales, events, communications and service roles usually include one; if you add a photo, use a recent portrait on a plain background.
