Engineering managers and site managers screen engineers' CVs by keyword: AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Siemens PLC, safety card, construction practising certificate. They need to know what you draw with, which machines you have run and what scale of project you have worked on. An engineering CV template therefore puts skills, equipment and certificates first. This article shows how to write one for mechanical, electrical and construction roles, and how to choose among the 12 templates.
Each branch of engineering has its own set of keywords, and the reader looks for exactly those words in the first few seconds. Use the exact names of software, equipment ranges and drawing standards, abbreviated the way the industry does.
| Branch | Software and equipment often searched for | Certificates often asked for |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical | Software and equipment often searched forSolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, CNC machines | Certificates often asked for3G and 6G welding; operating lifting and pressure equipment |
| Electrical, automation | Software and equipment often searched forSiemens and Mitsubishi PLCs, HMI, variable frequency drives, EPLAN | Certificates often asked forElectrical safety card, occupational safety |
| Construction, M&E | Software and equipment often searched forAutoCAD, Revit, MS Project, cost estimating, HVAC | Certificates often asked forPractising certificates for supervision and design |
After your contact details comes a one-line summary such as "Electrical and automation engineer, 5 years, Siemens and Mitsubishi PLCs, 3 production lines handed over". Next comes a block of software, equipment and the standards you have worked to. Then certificates: occupational safety card, construction practising certificate with its class, welding certificates, each with the issuer and expiry date. Experience by project comes after that, and education at the bottom of the page.
For each project, give four things: the type of project, its scale, your role and a measurable result. In engineering, the formula action, number, result becomes: what you did, on which system, and how much it improved.
Example projects section for an electrical and automation engineer
Electrical and Automation Engineer, X M&E Company, Dong Nai, 06/2021 to present
Programmed a Siemens S7-1500 PLC and WinCC HMI for a filling line running 12,000 bottles an hour, handed over on schedule after 5 months. Cut downtime caused by sensor faults from 40 minutes to 10 minutes per shift by adding fault diagnostics to the operator screen.
Civil engineers write it the same way: "supervised the structural works of a 25-storey building, 120 workers; 14 of 15 milestones accepted on time; no accidents in 18 months".
A missing safety card causes the longest delay: factories will not let you onto the shop floor without one.
Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese and European-owned factories accept English CVs and value a second foreign language; Japanese N3, Korean TOPIK and Chinese HSK are often named explicitly in job posts. Domestic contractors and M&E companies accept Vietnamese. Keep technical terms in English in both versions: PLC, HMI, HVAC, BOQ, shop drawing. One to two pages; move a long list of projects to an appendix and keep three to five representative projects in the main CV.
This group has 12 templates, because engineering ranges from mechanical to construction. If you have a lot of software and certificates, choose a two-column template: the side column holds software, equipment and certificates, and the main column is for projects. If you are applying through a large group's careers portal, choose a one-column template so the screening system reads it correctly. Each template offers 10 layouts, 36 backgrounds and 69 fonts; fill it in once, download a PDF, and you can match it against a job post to see which keywords are still missing.
List your graduation project and course projects as projects: topic, software used, outcome and grade. Add your placements in workshops or on construction sites, with the work you did and the equipment you handled.
Yes, with the expiry date and a line saying you are willing to retrain. Many factories run their own periodic training for new starters, so having held a card is still a plus.
For design engineers, yes: choose three to five representative drawings or models, export them to PDF and put the link in your CV. Drawings from confidential projects can only be used with permission.
