An English CV is not a word-for-word translation of a Vietnamese one. Section names, date formats, phone numbers, degrees and the way each bullet point starts all follow conventions that recruiters at foreign companies recognise immediately. Việc Hot has 12 English CV templates; the previews show English content and a CV created from this page defaults to English. The sections below go through how to write each section, a list of common verbs, and when to make an English-Vietnamese bilingual CV.
Send an English CV when the job post is written in English, when a foreign manager takes part in the interviews, when a foreign language is part of the job, or when applying for management trainee programmes and scholarships. If a Vietnamese company posts the job in Vietnamese, a well-written Vietnamese CV is always safer than a strained English one.
Foreign companies in Vietnam often have a Vietnamese HR person reading the CV and a foreign line manager. When unsure, a bilingual CV (see the last section) works for both readers.
| Vietnamese | English | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mục tiêu nghề nghiệp | EnglishSummary or Professional Summary | NotesTwo to three sentences, do not start with "I am" |
| Kinh nghiệm làm việc | EnglishWork Experience | NotesMost recent first |
| Học vấn | EnglishEducation | NotesPlace before experience if you recently graduated |
| Kỹ năng | EnglishSkills | NotesSeparate professional skills from tools |
| Chứng chỉ | EnglishCertifications | NotesInclude issuer and year |
| Hoạt động | EnglishActivities or Volunteer Experience | NotesState your role and results |
| Người tham chiếu | EnglishReferences | NotesYou can write "Available upon request" |
Use familiar section names. Screening systems and human readers both search for them; creative names like "My Journey" lose both.
| Item | Write | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Phone number | Write+84 912 345 678 | Avoid0912.345.678 when sending to a foreign reader |
| Address | WriteHo Chi Minh City, Vietnam | AvoidFull house number and street |
| Dates | WriteMar 2022 - Aug 2025 | AvoidMixing 03/2022 and 2022-08 in the same CV |
| University degree | WriteBachelor of Business Administration, Foreign Trade University | AvoidTranslating the university name your own way |
| Classification | WriteGPA 3.4/4.0 or Graduated with Distinction | AvoidWriting "Good" for a Vietnamese "khá" grade |
Start each bullet point with a past-tense verb (the present tense is fine for your current job), drop the subject "I", then add the object, the scale and the result. Avoid "Responsible for" and "Helped with", because they describe duties rather than what you achieved.
| Type of work | Common verbs |
|---|---|
| Managing, leading | Common verbsLed, Managed, Coordinated, Supervised, Trained |
| Creating, improving | Common verbsBuilt, Launched, Designed, Streamlined, Automated |
| Sales, growth | Common verbsGrew, Secured, Negotiated, Expanded, Converted |
| Analysis, reporting | Common verbsAnalyzed, Forecasted, Reconciled, Audited, Reported |
| Serving customers | Common verbsResolved, Handled, Supported, Retained |
Before and after (illustrative figures)
Before: Responsible for social media of the company.
After: Managed Facebook and TikTok channels for a skincare brand; grew followers from 12,000 to 45,000 in 9 months and cut cost per lead by 30%.
When you finish, read each bullet point aloud. If you would not feel confident explaining a sentence again in English at the interview, simplify it.
The Việc Hot CV editor supports 17 languages and a bilingual mode: section names appear in both languages, for example "Work experience / Kinh nghiệm làm việc" when English is the primary language and "Kinh nghiệm làm việc / Work experience" when Vietnamese is. This suits foreign companies whose CV reader is Vietnamese. This group has 12 templates; each has 10 layouts, 36 backgrounds and 69 fonts.
A CV opened from this page is already set to English. Fill it in from your Việc Hot profile, then rewrite the wording in English.
Set Vietnamese as the secondary language so section names show in both languages.
Download a PDF to email, click "Download Word" when the company asks for a .docx file, or share a link with the recruiter. The Word file has section names in the primary language only; to keep bilingual section names, send the PDF.
American, British and Australian companies usually do not need one and some advise against it. Japanese and Korean companies in Vietnam and Vietnamese banks are often used to seeing a photo. Follow the job post.
Give the certificate and score, for example "IELTS 7.0 (2025)", or use the CEFR scale such as "English: C1". Without a certificate, describe work you have done in English: "Daily email and calls with clients in Singapore".
One page with under five years of experience, two pages for managers or specialists. More than two pages is rarely read in full.
Only if the job post asks for both. If you want both readers to understand the same document, use one bilingual CV instead of two separate files.
