Tips for a sales job application letter

Use concrete figures

Monthly revenue, how far you beat targets or new clients each quarter.

State your products and territory

Employers want to know your client base and the territory you covered.

How you look after existing clients

An example of after-sales care is more convincing than describing yourself.

Sales application letter template: which figure belongs in the first sentence

7 sectionsAbout 3 min readUpdated 01/10/2026

A sales manager reads a sales application letter (đơn xin việc) the way they read a sales report: looking for figures, product category and territory, and only then for the reason you want the job. A letter that opens with "dynamic and enthusiastic" usually gets passed over. This article shows how to put your sales figures in the first sentence, how to write an experience paragraph built around targets, and what to do if you have never sold anything.

What a sales manager looks for in an application letter

The reader is almost always the sales manager or sales director, because they carry the target of the person being hired. They want to know what you sell, to whom and where, what percentage of target you achieve and whether you have your own transport for field work. Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), real estate, insurance and software are each measured differently, so your figures must come with the product category.

The first sentence is a figure and a product category

After the "To:" line (Kính gửi) and the position applied for, the next sentence gives your average monthly sales, target achievement, product category and territory: "three years selling industrial cleaning equipment to factories in Dong Nai, average sales of 1.8 billion VND a month, 112% of target in 2025". Add your means of transport and how willing you are to travel to other provinces, because that is the first question at interview.

An experience paragraph with sales figures: a B2B sales example

A sample paragraph from someone who sells equipment to factories:

Experience paragraph in a sales executive application letter

For the past three years I have been a sales executive for industrial cleaning equipment at a distribution company, covering Dong Nai and Tay Ninh with about 60 factory customers. My average sales in 2025 were 1.8 billion VND a month, 112% of target, including 14 new customers I found myself by surveying industrial parks. One long-standing customer stopped buying in 2024 because of late deliveries; I proposed a fixed weekly delivery schedule and kept a contract worth 400 million VND a year.

I have my own car, can travel to the provinces three days a week and would like to bring this base of factory customers to the product lines your company distributes.

Never sold before: write from part-time jobs and freelance selling

Evening telesales for courses, selling online as a freelance sales agent, working a supermarket counter: all of these come with numbers. Eighty calls a day closing five orders is a figure. Add your transport, the areas you can cover and that you accept sales-based pay; a sales manager values someone willing to take on a target more than someone talking about ambitions.

Handwritten or typed, and whether the formal format is needed

Sales jobs rarely call for a handwritten letter; typed, printed and signed by hand, or sent as a PDF is enough. Large distributors and state-owned enterprises still collect paper files that include a letter, and then you keep to the format: the national name and motto as set by Decree 30/2020/ND-CP, the national name in capitals, the motto with hyphens between its phrases. The template on this page already has that part built in; keep the letter to one page, with the figures in the top half.

Common mistakes and how to submit the letter

  • Giving sales figures without a time frame or a target to compare them with.
  • Mentioning "major customers" without the product category or territory.
  • Opening with "a passion for sales" instead of a figure.
  • Stating an expected salary without separating fixed salary and commission.

When you apply through Việc Hot, attach the letter with your CV and mention the areas you can cover in the message. By email, put the position and territory in the subject line. Applying in person at a branch or showroom often leads to an interview on the spot, so bring your personal record form (sơ yếu lý lịch) and a copy of your degree.
